Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Recruitment only for freshman?
Not at all! Sorority life offers many wonderful opportunities for all college women. All college women are invited to participate regardless of year.

How do sororities decide who to invite back to their events?
As your schedule of events is reduced from round to round, so is the number of women each sorority is allowed to invite back. Everyone who participates in Recruitment has much to offer a sorority, but sororities must release some potential new members, just as you will have to make decisions about some sororities. Every sorority uses a democratic voting process to decide which potential new members to invite back and which to release.

How will I pay for a sorority?
Sororities have various scholarships and payment plans to assist their members. Ask the members that you meet how they pay for their membership and what financial assistance their chapter offers. Financial concerns should not keep any potential new member from withdrawing from Recruitment or their sorority.

I heard that I should wait to register for recruitment so that I can still hang out with my friends that are in sororities. Is that true?
Absolutely not! You can definitely still hang out with your friends after you register for recruitment. Normal day to day contact is permitted, so you can see your friends. You are just not supposed to visit them in their sorority house, except during scheduled recruitment events, and you should not talk specifically about their sorority. They should not be trying to sway your decision, but you can still see them.

If I'm a legacy to a sorority, is there anything I should know?
Each potential new member is considered individually; legacies are not obligated to join the sorority of their family member any more than that sorority is required to offer her a bid. Both the sorority and the potential new member are looking for mutual compatability, not a family connection.

What if I am shy?
It is most important to be yourself. Every sorority is looking for a variety of members. Smile and feel free to talk and ask questions. Relax and enjoy the experience!

What if I only want to be in a certain sorority?
Women going through Recruitment often experience the greatest disappointment by beginning the recruitment process wanting to be in one or a few certain sororities. Sorority membership is more than wearing certain letters. Don’t make decisions based on stereotypes and other opinions. Keep an open mind and make the decision that is right for you.

Do I have to go to all the Recruitment events?
Yes! The goal of Recruitment is to get enough information to make an informed decision as to what chapter you would like to join; therefore it is best that you attend as many events as your schedule permits. The events are during nights and weekend days to make sure that there are minimal schedule conflicts.

What if I have a field trip to attend?
As with any extracurricular activity, school always comes first. Chapters will be notified of your absense (as long as you turn in an excuse form).

What if I can't make it to Orientation?
Your Gamma Chi will contact you after orientation to find out why you were unable to attend. She will then fill you in on what you missed and what you can expect in the upcoming days. If you will have any more absenses, you need to let her know as soon as possible.
